This is the story of a man in his later years who finds himself a very long way from home and hearth when the SHTF. It’s a tale of the drive to get home come hell or high water.

I’m writing it about the way I myself would get home after an event. I can only hope I would do as well in real life.

I have the will and the drive and know-how but maybe the ol' body is low on fuel. Time will tell.

This one starts with Johnny Long Walker. A Walker who has been shot in the ass. He's sitting waiting for his partner to return. This certainly isn't the beginning of the story nor is it the end.

John is an ex Marine. He's 6'6" tall and was a bit overweight when he and his Golden Retriever Molly were on vacation in Montana. John lives in Texas. John was stopped at a BLM/USFS campground where he was the only person in that campground. It was to late in the year for vacationers and to early for hunters. He has a Dodge Truck and a travel trailer.

John always thought that some major event would happen. What it was he didn't know. Because of his thoughts on the subject John has always been a prepper. Food, supplies, water, tools , seeds, guns and ammo have always been on his list of things a survivor would need. He has loads of those supplies at his home in Texas.

Well the SHTF at night while John was asleep. Of course he found out when he saw he had no electricity at all. John tried to get his generator going. Nada He tried to start his truck. Nada. His cell phone also didn't work. Now John knew something catastrophic had happened. He thought it was an EMP. John was just short of the Montana/Idaho border and figured he had one long walk ahead of him.

John immediately armed himself with his Para P-14 pistol in a drop holster and he also dug out his AR-15 rifle and his 870 shotgun loaded with slugs. He loaded all three weapons. John and Molly headed down the road to see if there was anyone else around. What he found was a few cars on the side of the road. Montana doesn't usually have much traffic especially on the mountain roads. John, a military man first last and always, stepped into the trees to watch for a while. John didn't hear planes and there were no people around.

John stepped up to a car that was on the side of the road and found a body. The area around the man was loaded with 9 mm shell casings so John knew the man didn't go down without a fight. John buried the man and headed back to his camp site knowing there were those around that would kill you.

The fact that the killers had driven off let John know there were some old working vehicle around. He had followed a blood trail to the middle of the road where it ended. The dead man had wounded one of his attackers. The mans car had been ransacked.

John had meat in his freezer in the trailer. He would be making jerky out of that meat and try to use all of it before he had to start walking. He went through what he had in the pantry part of the trailer to see just what he did have for spices and anything else he would be taking with him. His guns and ammo were a must now.

Of course the men came back and hit the campground. They had no tactical training at all and John killed them all. John stripped them of anything he could use to include weapons and ammo. John now had a working truck and the bed of that truck to haul his supplies. John leaves the campground and heads for Texas. So begins one damned fine read.

This one has John, Molly, Sandy,a ranch John and Molly visit, a ranch that has horses, mules and cattle, a ranch full of good people who help John, a ranch where their three cattle dogs disappeared, a ranch that comes under attack, a John who lends a hand, a John who trades the truck for three mules, Buck a buckskin riding mule and two red pack mules, a John who heads out leaving a ranch well able to defend itself, a John who finds out traveling by mules is better than traveling by vehicle, the mules can go places a vehicle will never be able to go, up on the ridges to watch for outlaws, a John who comes upon a Vietnam Vet named Harvey who is also a prepper, he and his family and friends live off the grid and have for years, a John who makes more new friends, a John who heads out only to find a man, a woman and two small boys killed by raiders, a John who buries the bodes and heads out, a John who hears loud must, a John who knows he's found the killers, five men with an old truck and motorcycles, a man in a tent with a woman, a woman who gets the mans knife and cuts his penis off, a woman who then stabs another in the guts, John then kills the other three, the woman who John thinks is a young girl is named Sandy and John and Sandy will have one great adventure as they both head for Texas.

Five Stars and then some.

A Long Lonely Road Book 1 The Beginning eBook TJ Reeder Reviews

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first of the series and have already ordered the 2nd and can't wait to start. For me it's an adventure going home instead of the SHTF. Some no bulls*** violence, a little romance, and a long and interesting adventure into the wilderness. Loved all the characters and animals. Great job, keep them coming I know I won't get tired of reading about them.
I enjoyed this first volume and I intend to follow the author as he continues his adventure. The story is a bit too John Wayne for my taste, but the story moves along nicely. The author does a great job of conveying his love for the wide open spaces of the Western U.S. We need to see a bit more character development. I suggest the author watch The Searchers some Saturday afternoon. What made the movie great was the directors portrayal of Ethan as a man with a shadowed past, who had capacity for devotion, but also for all consuming hatred. It was not until the last reel of the film that the audience would know what Ethan did when he found the missing girl. At this point the characters in Reeder's book are a bit too one-dimensional. Maybe our hero and his lady will encounter some other characters with a typical human mixture of good and bad.
A very good beginning. I applaud your efforts and I for one will follow you to Texas and beyond. Thanks for the fun...
Okay writing, story and characters. Not worth paying the same amount over and over again for a book that has been broken into tiny fragments when it should all be contained in a few actual books. I would gladly read the rest of the series if the author would pull the rest of the chapter sized "books" together and stop being so greedy.
I've read all three books, it's a good story. This story is pretty much an oral story written down, with short paragraphs spanning broad timelines and focuses on specific events. A spell checker was run over it, but the grammar is as bad as it gets. I plowed through it, no problem, but anybody with a tic for major grammatical errors will probably have an aneurysm. Guilty pleasure, nice pulp fiction, don't expect refinement or highbrow introspection.
I gave this story 5 stars since it had everything I was looking for. SHTF,long way from home, a hero and heroine, some romance, a lot of guns, travel on horse and mule, camping,
Meeting good people along the way and the bad being terminated quickly without remorse, moved along at a good pace and kept me interested . Most people love the author, so I knew I couldn't go wrong. I also knew there are many books in the series and I really like that, because when you read a good story, and become invested in the characters, as I did, you never want it to end. The only thing that messed me up a bit, is that, then was always used instead of than, which a lot of people mess up, so I forgive the error. Otherwise TJ, you did
a great job and I appreciate you having written this book for our enjoyment. Thank you , and keep up the great work !
This is the first of many, many sequential novellas that take place in the Western former USA over several years, and they describe the characters and events in a post-EMP life of the protagonist, patterned after the author.

Of course, as is the case in most of the post apocalyptic books, there are rampant punctuation, spelling and typo errors. The author uses "then," when he means "than" (there is a difference in the meanings!) Several different persons supposedly did editing and proofreading, but didn't do a very good job. It is also written in a non-stop fashion, with long paragraphs of narrative and dialog mixed together, but no chapters or conventional construction. The author is a former Marine, but seems to have forgotten much of the details of military weaponry.

I guess the short novellas are worth the price of $2,99 each (downloaded to your ) as compared to buying a paperback. I would recommend the series, but be prepared for several score of the installments.
